2018: A Jam-Packed Year
For the last two years, my job as a San Francisco Chronicle columnist has been to illustrate the cultural moments I witness; but this column takes a step back to assess the year as a whole. It was a weird one. It was fraught nationally, but also at city view. The city’s whiplash evolution from quaint and quirky to moneyed and opulent continues apace. The overlapping political and cultural narratives makes for a strange and beautiful stew. The events I attended this year combined the (beautifully) gaudy side of Bay Area culture with a self awareness that remains fascinating. Getting to represent what I see remains a gift. I wonder what next year will look like.
