The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo is something I can say I’m embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t heard of until last year. Founded in 1984 by Lu Vason, the show was established in response to black cowboys being historically excluded from (predominantly white) rodeos around the country. The rodeo was named after the legendary (and largely unknown) Bill Pickett, who invented the rodeo move known as “starring.” This story, which was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, showcased the amazing cowboys and cowgirls of the traveling, all-black rodeo.
